This was my Unicorn. A "T" handle Auger adapter from the 1800's. This was cast in a mold with pot metal. In my mind the perfect auger tool minus a way to hold the bit in. There was only one representation of it in the world in a post from England in 2012. After 5 years I found my very own in North Carolina! The previous owner had actually drilled through it and the tip of an auger that was pinned permanently in place. A friend of mine milled the pin out, removed the auger and I finally held my Unicorn.
This was my first attempt at an auger adapter and I still love it! I would cut the chuck off damaged bit braces and have pipe welded on top. A true bulletproof workhorse that could handle any diameter bit. The only downfall was that it weighed in at 13 ounces.
This elegant little adapter was made from a very simple brace from 1780!!! The brace was damaged but I still had an issue with cutting up a tool that was almost 240 years old at the time. As beautiful as this piece is the bits wouldn't seat completely because the chuck was too shallow by nature. For a perfect fit the augers would have to be modified which was something I am strongly opposed to. Another modification I made later was moving the thumb screw 90 degrees on the tool so your fingers wouldn't contact it while the tool was in use.
The Ratcheting Heavy. The most efficient of all my designs. This incorporated the ratcheting mechanism of the bit and brace, slightly modified and with a piece of pipe welded on top. Very fast and the best tool, in a tight spot, where you may only have 30 degrees of room to work. The down side was this piece weighed in at 16 ounces!
This tool is perfect. This is the first tool I manufactured completely from scratch. There's a secret to it that I'm not giving but it's more than meets the eye. The bits seat perfectly and the thumb screw was increased to a 3/8" key for more reliable tightening, and to avoid thread stripping. It weighs in at a little less than 4 ounces. The only down side is its relatively expensive to make. More expensive than what I was ready to sell it for at least. Regardless there is a good chance that I'll build and offer these again in the future.
The Result! This tool perfectly seats any bit of the old style brace bits. With the help of a tremendous friend I was able to get this tool developed in CAD and manufactured in CARBON FIBER POLYCARBONATE!!!! I have tested this tool up to a 1" diameter bit boring into OAK 7" deep. I was able to cut my production cost almost in half. This facilitated me hitting my Goal of offering the best adapter I've ever come up with at a price point that everyone could accept.
